Hi,

A bit of advice really, I have not added or taken away anything on my
system but since yesterday each time I start the PC I get the message
saying I need to activate Windows. I am running Windows XP home. I don't
know if this is a genuine message or if I have had some virus at some
time, I have run scans for virus and malware and such but nothing found.
Any help much appreciated.

Gerald

Interesting reading.

Phone activation is used to get a local phone number to call and get Vista
activated by phone. For more information, see: Windows Help and How-to:

should apply to XP

After 12 April 2010, XP SP3 your computer will NOT be offered ANY critical
security updates nor will Windows Update website be available until & unless
you get XP SP3 installed.

The info above is not fully correct. Direct from Microsoft:

"Support is ending for some versions of Windows

* Support for Windows Vista without any service packs
ended on April 13, 2010.

* Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) will
end on July 13, 2010.*

If you're running one of these versions after support ends, you won't
get security updates for Windows.

* Note: There's no SP3 for the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you’re
running the 64-bit version of Windows XP with SP2, you have the latest
service pack and will continue to be eligible for support and receive
updates until April 8, 2014."
