Windows 2K Reboots on Kernel Error During Startup

I am working with a number of Windows 2000 PC's that suddenly are getting
into a rebooting loop at startup. The computer will power up, the Windows
splash screen will appear and the bar accross the bottom will fil completely.
Then it gets an "Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap" error message at a Blue screen
and then does a dump of physical memory. I've heard that this could be
caused by a recent Windows update provision. Any insights on what this is
and how to fix it would be appreciated.

Extra notes.
I have been able to boot successfully to Safe Mode.
I have rerun W2K SP4 and then it will boot up once and then fall back into
looping at reboot again.

Then post in a Windows 2000 newsgroup - this one is for XP, as in
windowsXP.general......
