Windows 2000-WD80 GB SATA HD-will not boot from cd

I am building a new system with a ECS 760GX-M Mobo with two onboard SATA
connectors. My problem is this: I can get to the BIOS where it shows me my
DVD burner and my HD. When I put an XP cd in, installation begins like
normal. When I try to install 2000 it gets to the "Boot from cd" screen and
just stays there. I have pressed spacebar and enter and you can hear the cd
spin up, but nothing happens. Do I need to install SATA drivers for 2000
since they aren't on cd? I am new to SATA and was under the impression it is
supposed to be easier than eide hdd, but have had more luck with them than
SATA. If I do need to install drivers, how do I go about that without an OS?
c: somewhere? Any detailed help is much appreciated.

If your installing win2k you usually have to F6 during the installation, at
the point were it asks if you wish to install third party drivers, you then
install sata/raid drivers from 'floppy' - if you miss the F6, the
installation will fail.

Usually the mobo cd will have an app to create this floppy, you need to read
mobo book. or they can be downloaded from mobo site.
You sometimes have to set boot order/sata in the bios, once again check mobo
book.
good luck

The option of pressing F6 never even comes up-it just stays at the font which
says boot from cd.

Lets go back
"When I put an XP cd in, installation begins like normal. When I try to
install 2000 "
this was a typo?

Your Win2k CD should boot just like the Win XP CD. Possibly your Win2K CD is
going bad. Can you boot another PC with the Win2K CD? Is the CD a burned CD?
If the latter, maybe it is just not readable on that particular CD drive as
sometimes happens.

I doubt seriously that your problem is related to SATA at all, though there
remains a small possibility. Maybe ECS tech support can offer some insight.

In your judgement nor is anyone else's apparently.

Start/run/regedit
(if unsure export registry for safety)
select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
navigate to system/services/atapi/parameters or
system/currentcontrolset/services/atapi/parameters
right click for new
Select Dword name it EnableBigLba (take note of case)
set value to 1
end regedit
reboot

I appreciate the help but it was not a typo. When quoting me please include
entire quote: "When I put an XP cd in, installation begins like
normal. When I try to install 2000 it gets to the "Boot from cd"
screen and just stays there."

My 2000 and XP are both burned discs-Maybe the 2000 is failing-I shall try
another. Thank you

Perhaps explain further are you trying to instal WinXp or Win2k
to put it another way what 2000 cd?
If Win2k CD are you saying, if you *initially* try to boot from win2k cd
nothing happens
or are you trying to set up a dual boot sys?

OK,
I am doing a fresh install of Win2k and it will not recognize or boot from
CD. Not a dual-boot. Thank you

The O/P was quite clear in describing his problem. He stated that he COULD
boot from a WinXP CD and could NOT boot from a Win2K CD and was wondering if
it might be SATA related. Nothing ambiguous at all in his statements.

And I do, in fact, believe that the vast majority of posters in these
newsgroups are intelligent, thinking people who have a true desire to help
their fellows. Even you, Borge, from time to time offer some good, sound
advice.

Over the years I have posted several thousand articles to usenet. Of those
several thousand, eight have questioned someones ability to comprehend what
they read. I don't think that's enough anecdotal evidence to justify your
response.

Please note that I did offer some constructive advice to the O/P concerning
his problem, unlike some others who shall remain nameless.
