Windows 2000 VERY slow to shut down

Peggy A

For some reason, it takes a really long time for windows
2000 to either shut down or log off as one user so you can
log on as a different user. I've applied SP4, but that
doesn't seem to help. Any ideas on what might be causing
the slow shutdown?

W2K is slow, usually takes 2-3 minutes depending on what
is running. Close everything before you shut down, that
should help

If you have exchange installed it will take a lot longer. On my server (133mhz) it takes about 5mins. Thats with Win 2000 server and Exchange 2003

Hi Peggy - See ***** below.

You might want to check and see if you've installed Hotfix Q329170. If so,
and unless you're sure you need it, it apparently causes major slowdowns on
shutdown and should be removed. See here to decide about whether you need
this hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329170. There's been a lot
of discussion about this in microsoft.public.win2000.general nws gp
recently. If you decide to remove it, go to your Control Panel|Add/Remove
Programs and see if Q329170 is listed as installed and, if so, remove it.

This "hotfix" is also installed as part of SP4, and thus can't be removed
separately if you've installed that.

************ If you decide that you do need to keep it, or you have SP4
installed, an alternative that's been proposed that will allow you to be
able to exit normally even with the hotfix is to run "net stop spooler"
(without the quotes) from a cmd window before shutdown. You might want to
consider adding that to a logout script that stops the spooler at shutdown,
and kept the hotfix in that case. (I've verified that this works, BTW.)

MS has a fix available if you phone them. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814770

plus (Courtesy of Steve Parry)

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

and then (added by me) set waittokillservicetimeout at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

to 5000 ms instead of the default 20000.

(I can verify that these last two make a HUGH difference in shutdown times.)

One last area to check. Unless you actually use them, it has been reported
that unchecking Enable Offline Files in Folder Options|Offline Files tab
substantially decreases the shutdown time (presumtively by eliminating the
"Synchronize all offline files" step).

Are you on a Domain? If so, are you at a satellite office
and have a slow link between the DC and the workstation
(s)? That could always be a cause of slow shutdowns -
having to save profiles over slow links.

Also, is this happening on mutliple machines at this
location? If not, what are the differences between the
machines operating OK and the one(s) not shutting down
quickly?

I had a similar problem. my machine would sometimes take
5-10 minutes to start and almost as long to shut down. the
solution was to disable all the services that are not
needed. what srvices don't you need?. got to
www.blackviper.com this man has done a lot of research on
both w2k and xp he gives a list of services and what they
do. a word of caution, disable only one service at a time.
by the way my startup and shut down times are just over a
minuite now

Check the event log, especially the application log, to see if there are
any interesting entries. You may have the infamous registry handle
problem, which produces entries like this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 09/20/2003
Time: 15:57:36
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: HM-GLS
Description:
Windows cannot unload your registry class file. If you have a roaming
profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.

DETAIL Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)).
