Windows 2000 TCP/IP Reinstall help?

D

Dr. Bruce K

I've been in touch with several technical support people
who tell me I have a Winsocket error on my c. 2002 Windows
2000 Sony Vaio notebook. The Microsoft solutions page
tells me to find a similar computer, save the files to a
floppy, and then copy them onto the machine that's been
corrupted (it appears TCP/IP was somehow removed by my
using spyware software).

My incredulous question is this: I cannot easily find
another machine configured like my laptop. Is it true that
there is no place on the Internet where I can find these
files and DOWNLOAD them onto a working machine and then
copy them to the offending machine?

Thanks very much Steve, but this is exactly the "solution"
I was posing a question about. Microsoft is telling me to
get rid of the files on the bad computer, copy the files
from a good computer and install them on the bad.

So my question remains, why in the world is there not a
place online where I can simply get the good files? I
suppose I'm missing something, but TCP/IP for Windows 2000
Professional seems pretty specific to me.

See the link below and do method 1. Basically you first delete the winsock
keys from the registry and then uninstall and install tcp/ip. MS recommends
that you backup for winsock keys which is always best practice but if they
are already corrupt the point is moot. --- Steve

Method #1 of that article tells you how to repair the problem if you have
only one computer.

Method 1 says to simply delete those registry entries and then the uninstall
and reinstall of tcp/ip will replace them. --- Steve
