Windows 2000 slower after hard-disk upgrade

I changed my 3year old HD (15GB) to a brand new 80GB.
I should have almost 10 times HD performance as per specs,
but I have LESS PERFORMANCE than with the old one. RW tests
2.5MB/sec, as the old HD gave me 4MB/sec.

System is a AMD 2000+ (Asus board w/NVidia chipset,
bios/drivers up to date) 256MB Ram DDR266, Windows 2000 SP2.

Heard of this anyone????

UDMA working well in, The same HD is faster when put in the secondary IDE
connector.

There is something in W2K that slows the drive as if DMA didn't worked.

I'm Stuck to reformat and reinstall.
