I have just recieved an DELL Lattitude D600 imaged with Windows 2000 PRO. I
added software (which is also on my desk PC) and placed short cuts on my
desktop.
The ICONs are there but, superimposed on them are what looks like waste
baskets with wihte on red "UN" on them. They still work as short cuts but
they all look the same. IT techs do not know what the problem is or how to
fix it. But they want to re-image the laptop. I would like to find out what
the problem is, and how to fix it.
Does anyone have any fixes or should I have them re-image.

Thanks,

Control Panel|Display|Appearance|Advanced and try changing the icon size by
one, apply changes, then go back in and change the size back. This should
cause the operating system to rebuild the shelliconcache file which may be
in a corrupted state.

This should cause the operating system to rebuild the shelliconcache
file which may be in a corrupted state.

I've found that an additional step is necessary for this to work:
Start a Shutdown, wait a couple of seconds watching for brief HD activity
which is cachefile being rebuilt, then Cancel

FWIW

That is an interesting procedure. Never heard of it before. I'd like to know if that helped in lieu of Ray Costanzo's post.

Just to clarify: not in lieu of, but performed after the steps he posted.

The reason wht I mentioned this is. You rebooted after you applied Dave's fix of not? While you were doing that you didn't reboot just did what you said or you read the procedutre eleswhere? You know what you did might have even wroked without Dave's Fix not becasue his wrong but because that has always worked as he described in Windows 2000. Somethimes it didn't work in Windows 98 they had a different fix.

Actually, I stumbled onto Dave's procedure myself a few years back (the
resizing steps). My goal was not to fix a corrupt file, although on rare
occasions I have used it for that, but to reduce its bloated size back to
something like when OS was first installed -- a fresh start so to speak. I
also stumbled onto the Shutdown/Cancel step myself after I noticed
performing the resize steps, didn't immediately change the cache file
(verified by viewing file size/attributes in Explorer). Reboot of course
accomplished the same thing (the rebuild, I can only assume, is performed
prior to the screen turning black as part of that), but I wanted quicker
effect absent immediate effect. Incidently, this doesn't work without a
reboot in XP.

Hey Guy's

Ray's solution (VIA Dave) worked! After I changed the size and then chaged
back to normal, and rebooted the problem was solved. Thanks for all your help.
