Deleting Short Cut Icons

I recently purchased a notebook full of software I wont be needing. I decided
to uninstall some of it. After I successfully uninstalled all the unnecessary
software, I couldn't delete the short cut icons on my desktop. Have somebody
encountered such dilemna and how can I delete these I cons cluttering my desk
top?

if you have uninstalled the program then the icon should disapear on next
bootup or you could delete icon first then uninstall program
