Windows 2000 Server is not using the free disk space

Hi,

We have couple of servers running Windows 2000 Server and
Active Directory. About 5 of these servers were upgraded
from NT4 to Win2k and 2 of them are brand new install.

When the disk space goes under 450-500MB, the servers give
an error that the disk is full. The partitions are 2GB on
C drives. Why these servers don't use the available space?
No quotas, the pagefile and Temp folders are changed to D
drive (it has enough space). We uninstalled nearly
everthing running on the server and still have the same
problem. Any suggestions?

Thank You,
Kaan

An error indicating that the disk is full ("nearing capacity," if I am
thinking of the same error message that you're seeing) does not mean that
the operating system won't use that space. It's a warning to you that you
should check into this before you actually do run out of space and do
actually lose data.

Can you tell us where you're seeing the error message, and the exact text?

Matt,

When we were trying to copy a file or do anything on the
C:\ drive it was saying not enough space. Don't remember
the exact error.

We found out that the server was using 512 as cluster size
and it was fully fragmented. When we defragment the disk,
we can still use that space. It was an NT4 -> 2000 upgrade
and I don't know why the cluster size was 512 before.

Either we will continue defragmenting or will use a tool
to change the cluster size.

Thanks for your suggestions.
