I have a Windows 2000 Server with SP4 running a domain with five
workstations all running Windows XP with SP2. The workstations have no
problem logging onto the domain and accessing the shared drives. All of the
workstations use QuickBooks 2002 and connect to a company file on the
Server. There is a shared printer on the server that all of the workstations
are connected.
As of yesterday morning this all worked just fine. After a couple of hours
of work two of the PCs were no longer able to print to the server printer
and had problems with QuickBooks. They are able to open the QuickBooks
company file but have problems when they try to access some parts of it. The
other three workstations are not having any problems at all.
Since this started we have tried rebooting the PCs multiple times and tried
reconnecting the printer. The printer status on the workstations shows that
it is ready. When you try open the properties for the printer it shows the
hourglass and after a few minutes will display a message about not having
the drivers installed and asks to install them. I have tried installing them
and it does no good. After another few minutes the properties window will
finally open. When you try to print a test page is says there was an error
and asks if you want to troubleshoot. I have also tried to reconnect the
printer by browsing the network to the shared printer and choosing to
connect. All it does is shows the window with the searching icon and does
not connect the printer. I have also tried disabling the Windows XP
firewall.
All that I can tell that has changed is that two automatic windows updates
were applied yesterday morning to on one of the two PCs with the problem.
All of the PCs are setup to do automatic updates, but I have not been able
to check the other PCs to see if they are also up to date.
