Windows 2000 Repair

I have a Dell notebook running Windows 2000 Pro. It was
experiencing some problems so i ran the Windows Repair.
The repair seemed finish but after the reboot, the pc
pauses for 10-15 minutes on the "Windows 2000 Setup -
Please wait..." screen. Once it moves past that, it hangs
on the "Installing Devices..." screen and will not go any
farther. To rule out the problem being related to a
faulty piece of hardware, I installed a parallel
installation of Windows 2000 with no problems and it
boots into that install fine. But if I choose to boot
into the original installation, it says "Setup is being
restarted...", goes to the "Installing devices" screen
and stops. I ran sigverif to find any unsigned drivers
and moved them to a backup folder to rule out a bad
driver but that did not help. I have tried running the
repair again and also tried the repair/reinstall but it
does the same thing. I do not want to reformat if at all
possible. It seems to me that maybe a driver, or
something that loads during boot is causing it to hand
and not finish this setup. Any help would be appreciated.

I would try this:
- Boot with your Win2000 CD.
- When prompted, do not select "Repair". Select "Install" instead.
- The installation process will now locate your existing installations.
Select the one that is damaged, then allow it to be repaired.

You will need to re-install the latest service pack.

.
Thanks. I had already tried that with no success. It
completes the repair but upon reboot, it still hangs at
the same place.
