Windows 2000 professional blue screens while defragmenting hard drive

steve

I have a 40 gig hard drive, 1 gig of memory and dual 1gig
PIII processors.

The disk has 9 gigs of free space and is reported as being
9% fragmented. I was trying to clone the drive to a
larger hard drive using Norton Ghost and it fails saying
Ineed to defragment the source drive.

When I try to use either the windos defragmenter (which
reported almost a 100% fragmentation) or Norton Speed disk
that comes with System Works Professional 2004, the system
will blue screen after partially defragmenting the drive.

Is there a way to successfully defragment the drive and
not blue screen?

I had a similar problem: built-in defragger would hang up the
system at about 80% completion, requiring a press of the reset
button. CHKDSK would also hang up the system.

Turned out to be a failing hard disk, which finally went dead
about a week after the initial problem. Luckily for me, the
disk was one of a mirrored pair.

I'm not sure what your best bet is, other than to copy off all
your data files before going any further.

I had a similar problem with defrag hanging. I went into
task manager, stopped all services that were not
necessary, ran it again and it worked.
You may have something running in the background that is
stopping the defragger.

Good luck!

I am running a server with my computer for my personal
website. Could this be the problem? And how do I know
what services to shut down without corrupting the current
session.

The hard disk checks out both with windows and Norton.
