Windows 2000 Pro standby mode

When my computer goes into standby mode, if comes back out within 30 seconds and displays the message "this computer is in use and locked, enter password to continue". If I don't enter the password right away, the monitor shuts down and I have to do a reboot to get going again. The standby mode used to work fine, I don't know if an update caused the problem or if I inadvertently changed a setting to cause the problem. Any help would be great
