Windows 2000 Pro hangs at "Preparing Network Connections"

I have Windows 2000 Professional and it hangs when the "Preparing Network
Connections" screen is displayed, and again just before the taskbar and
desktop icons are displayed. Also, my saved passwords in IE and MSN Messenger
are gone and I no longer have the option of saving them. Anyone know what's
going on?
