windows 2000 pro evaluation version

What happens to an existing OS when installing an evaluation version?
When the evaluation version times out, does it revert to the prior OS,
or must one then upgrade to the full version? I'm currently running
Windows ME, thinking of installing the evaluation version to get
"hands on" for certs. I got this cheep(new), not sure if I'll like it
enough to crack open the wallet for a full version when XP is out
there.
