Hello,

My windows 2000 with service 5.00.2195 with service pack 4
hangs after logon with hour glass and stays in this state
until I restart computer and try again to logon. Sometimes
it will let me in with anyuser account after serveral
tries, sometimes it will not let me in at all. Could
anyone help me with this issue. Thanks.

Hi,

I have the same problem. I don't know how to solve it, but you can at least
circumvent it by terminating the explorer.exe task and launching a new one
through the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del works in this stage).

I hope this helps you at least to save your data.

I'm having the same problem with several computers. The computer will log in
if you log off and inmediatelly log back in. This brings you to the desktop.
We got hit by a worm a couple of weeks ago. It's likly that your computer is
infected with a worm.
All the computers that were affected were not updated with Microsoft
updates. After installing the updates, it causes the computer to crash (BSOD)
(Running Repair from the CD will sometimes fix the OS. So far I still get rid
of the hour glass hanging even though I updated the computer.
Also, Norton Antivirus 9 is loaded and upadated on the computers.

Please check if the following registry keys

1. Open registry editor (Start\Run\regedit)
2. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Make sure AutoAdminLogon is set to 1
4. Check if the account DefaultUserName, DefaultDomainName is a valid
account or one created by a virus.
5. If it is not a valid account then remove it.

You may also want to check

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce keys to see if they
have suspicious entries.
