Windows 2000 Boot Error

R

Ryan Wells

I am receiving the following error when booting up my PC:

It goes something like this:

error c0000218 {registry file failure} system cannot load
registry file system root/system 32/config/software
alternate is absent or corrupt

completed physical memory dump.

How do I fix this....I cannot even boot up the system in
safe mode

Boot your machine with your Win2000 CD, select Repair
when prompted, then select "Command Console".

Now find out what has happened to the file
c:\winnt\system32\config\software.

May be that the 'software' file is corrupted. There is one alternative
instead of re-installing.Try to replace this damaged file with the one
in \\systemroot\system32\repair
You will need to copy two files. The corrupted file and its log file
found in the same directory.

I've been having this problem for ages. Does your machine
attempt to reboot again after the hive error? If it does
simply let it continue rebooting and the machine should
eventually come back. My record is 32 reboots! If your
machine doesnt automatically reboot you may have to reload
the operating system as repair appears not to work. After
you re-install set automatic reboot after system failure
to on in control panel>system>advanced>startup and
Recovery.
I simply leave my machine running and only switch it off
when absolutely neccesary. If you search for c0000218 on
the web you find loads of entries, it seems to be a
particular problem for machines with ATA disk controllers.

Hope this helps,

Chris.
