Windows 2000 and Windows explorer

Somehow on our Windows 2000 server the left pane in
Windows Explorer is grey. We cannot figure out how to
make the tree on the left pane to come back. You can
stretch the left pane but it just makes the grey area
bigger. If you close the left pane there is only the
right pane left. Ant thoughts on how to get back the
default view in Windows Explorer? This is quite annoying
