Windows 2000 adding network printer. "Could not connect to the printer.."

Hi everyone.

I recently got my two computers networked. One is running Windows
2000 Pro, the other Windows 95. The Windows 95 machine has the
printer installed, while the Windows 2000 machine is responsible for
sharing an internet connection via proxy software (ICS included in
Windows 2000 wasn't working). But now my printer sharing doesn't
work! I deleted the printer, and tried to re-add on the Windows 2000
machine. Now, when I try to add a printer via the Add Printer menu in
Windows 2000, I get the following error message:

"Could not connect to the printer. You either entered a printer name
that was incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to
the server."

The Windows 2000 machine's IP is 192.168.0.1
The Windows 95 machine's IP is 192.168.0.2.

Both the NICs connecting the two computers have File and Printer
sharing installed. I have tried to install it with the proxy software
not running, but no luck. I don't see why it would go from working to
not working...

Any suggestions?

TIA

Taras

Hi Taras,

try this,

Share the printer on 95, assume the share name is "HP8150"
(hope your printer is connected to LPT1 )

Now on 2k m/c install the local printer with any port.
After proper installation right click on printer in 2k,
properties -> then select the ports tab.

then add the port by

add port -> Local Port -> new port

give \\192.168.0.2\HP8150

Hope this solves the problem.

Hi Shrinidhi,

That worked like a charm. Thanks a lot! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again
