But the choice is Microsoft's.

Legally, yes. In reality, far from it. All of MS's products are available
for free or the cost of the cd.

So, when is MS gonna ape the music industry and start busting teenagers and
70 somethings? That should improve their customer relations immensely.

yes i agree it is microsofts choice
though theres no harm in giving them a shove in the right direction ;)

i agree and if you are an american lobby your pollie to vote against the Australian Free Trade deal. It requires Australia to extend copyright from 50 to 70 years after death to match the USA. Copyright times should go down not up. Word 1 should, I think, be out of it's copyright time by about now - not in another 100 years or however long bill lives..

It is a very interesting subject i find
mainly because software and its copyrights are so different
to other media and as such the same rules cant be realistically applied
we need a rethink of this on a large scale.

copyright laws where a fix to the plagiarism that occured in art, written
works etc etc
all these things were tangible assets and usually once they were completed
remained unchanged substantially.
for example a book written by someone is not really updated
a painting is not re done later to improve a bit of it etc
software is a whole different ballgame.
in a very short space of time what was once cutting edge becomes obsolete
we have to be careful tho becuse some analolgies can be inaccurate
the car one for example and to an extent your mention of word 1
i dont class word 1 in the same light as windows 1.01
you can still write a letter with word 1 and as such it still does its basic
job even now
on modern pcs win 1.01 just doesnt in any way cut it as an OS

i am however a firm believer in the fact that authors of software are no
different
to any other business and deserve to be rewarded for there work.
unfortunately microsoft has been its own worst enemy like the music
industry.
both have used sharp practices and fleeced the public for so long that it
is really hard to feel any sympathy for them even when the law is on there
side.

Sure it should be M$'s decision, it is their product. But back then, they
encouraged piracy of this product which is virtually giving it away for
free. Why should obtaining it today be any different?!?

Windows XP crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Hi All

No need to argue.. I'm just using this as a resource for my work presenteation. nothing illegal. I've already asked microsoft about this.. and as expected, they cant help me. the product is ancient... and i think that reason is enough for me to resort to other alternatives.
