Thanks

All versions of Microsoft Windows must be purchased and cannot be
downloaded. Visit www.ebay.com and perform a search for previous
versions of Windows which may be for sale.

I haven't looked in a while, but several sites based on old
or "Ancient" operating systems used to exist on the web.Just
remember that most if not all are dependant on MS-Dos &
specific versions of DOS as well.

Several Retail outlets specialize in old and obsolete software.

Just try a Google for them.

By the way, if you are going to try and install these, may I
suggest you download Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 and use
it for the research work. It is a 45-Day free trial and if your
PC is recent with adequate memory, you should be able to
get these old O/S's up and running. I've got a VPC, that runs
Windows 1.00 just as a museum piece to show my son &
his friends how Windows began. Believe it or not, there is
actually a market for these old O/S's and Applications.
Especially, if you have unopened original material.

I guess that I don't have to pay for that 1960 vintage Ford Mustang -
according to your way of thinking (-:

I'd really love to see a 1960 Mustang. IIRC, the model was first
introduced circa 1965. ;-} But your point stands, of course.

yeah but just like games companies often give away
old games free after there reasonable selling period is over
so should MS.
no one would use win 1.01 for anything but nostalgia or histroy schoolwork
and as such i think common sense should apply

a (insert old year here) car will still fulfill its purpose same as a new
car
and get you from a to b.
a old operating system like win 1.01 is obsolete and not the same thing

The copyright in XP is based, in part, on Windows 1.0. If you don't protect your legal rights you can lose them. I suspect MS anti piracy stance is based on protecting it legal rights rather than revenue as in the past one can argue MS encouraged piracy of it's products.

When did that stop? When greed got the best of them?

Depends entirely on your bandwidth, of course. ;-} Anyway, the
original point was clearly about someone expecting to get something
for nothing.

Why should it be free? Can you explain your position.

Don't tell me you would actually pay for this if you needed it, but had the
choice Bruce?!? At least, would you pay M$'s prices?

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

If I wanted it badly enough and thought the price reasonable,
certainly. Just like with any other commercial product. I certainly
wouldn't expect to be given it for free.

"Why should it be free? Can you explain your position."

well i can have a go.

as windows 1.01 is obsolete and has no real userbase
it is certainly not marketable let alone a commercial product anymore.
i dont expect microsoft to expend any resources selling, supporting or
promoting it however nor would i consider it reasonable for them to
enforce any anti piracy measures against anyone who just would like
to see it for whatever reason .the person mentioned that he needed it
for research maybe for homework from school or whatever or just out of
curiosity

an interesting point was raised however in that if a future product is based
upon an older one and theydont protect it they could loose the right to
the newer work also.Thats a fascinating idea however i am not sure of its
voracity.neither am i sure that you could say with a straight face that
win xp contains anything remotely regarding win 1.01 other than the name
windows.an interesting point nonetheless.

I am not arguing with your points that win 1.01 is copyrighted or whatever
you are correct in that.
i am not advocating piracy either.
what i am advocating is a comman sense approach in this instance.

Greetings --

And yours is certainly not an unreasonable position. The only
real exception I'd take is that I think Microsoft should still
"enforce anti-piracy measures," but just so they don't set an unwanted
precedent. If Microsoft wants to provide its obsolete property to
individuals for historical purposes free-of-charge, I'm all for it.
But the choice is Microsoft's.

Sorry, but "common sense" is not in the Bruce Chamber's Collegiate
Dictionary.
