Every time I go to the windows update page and click on scan for
updates I get this message

Windows Update is looking for available updates... 0% complete

And that is as far as it goes. Sometimes is displays done in the
Status bar, but not always. Is anyone else getting this? I have been
for about three days now.

Thanks Rick, but when I use that link all I get is a blank page, I
refresh and it continues to come up the same.

From a Special Edition from Microsoft on the 15th. inst. I followed
the advice below.

Prevention:
1. Turn on Internet Connection Firewall (Windows XP or Windows Server
2003) or use a third-party firewall to block TCP ports 135, 139, 445
and 593; UDP port 135, 137,138; also UDP 69 (TFTP)and TCP 4444 for
remote command shell. To enable the Internet Connection Firewall in
Windows: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=220756

Do you think that would have anything to do with it please???

I have just tried it again with the same results, however I can go to
the Office page and the scan runs OK.

Had the same problem a couple of days ago - the MS website has several
suggested fixes - the one that worked for me was to manually download
the iuctl.cab file from the MS site, unpack it, and then install
iuctl.inf .. after which it all worked fine.

Hi Rick,

I have tried this URL. Not working for me. I am using a
third party ICF. ICF blocks all ports Microsoft suggest.
Is there another location for Microsoft Windows XP SP1
to turn off Windows' ICF? Rick will you reply e-mail?
Thank you,
A MS user who can not access
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Thanks again Rick.

Hi Joe,

See if the HOSTS file under C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc contains a
reference to the update site. If it does, remove it.
