window xp working slowly

dear sir,

i have a p-4 pc and windows xp on it . but its now
working very slowly. it takes several minutes to open a
program.i have downloaded quite a few things from the net
does it have something to do with it.speed of my
processor is 1.8ghz.plz tell me some suggestions to
improve the performance and speed of my computer. hope u
will look into my request.
