For several weeks, for now known reason, startup stalls (usually at start up
screen). Can restore to previous date and works ok. But time consuming
every day. Have installed Microsoft One and AVG virus protection and run
both on all the hard drives. Any suggestions? Thanks

If you installed virus protection ***after*** your problems started
then your installation may already be damaged. Some viruses will
corrupt certain files or the registry, and such damage may not be
detected by the virus scanner.

Have a look at the Event Viewer (eventvwr.exe).

Thanks for the speedy reply. But Norton antivirus was running before
the problem started and before I added the other two antivirus programs.
Have looked at the event logs, system logs etc. Frankly they show a awful lot
of rountine information, with only some errors which seem to post every day.
DCOM Code 10005 (three times)
SvCnlMgr Code 70001 ( 7 times)
SvCnlMgr Code 7026
DCOM Code 10005
Another symptom is that even during Restore, the computer sometimes freezes.
But never before windows xp prof starts to install.
Thanks!
