window xp sp1 install gone bad

installed windows xp sp1 and the dell will not boot all
of the way into windows. i get the slash screen then the
pc goes on to a blank bagroud with a movable mouse.
nothing else. i let it hank for an hour thinging it may
be loading final drivers and such. uninstalled sp1 in
safe mode and the pc booted fine. i closed out of all
running programs, reinstalled sp1 and now am back to the
problem. any ideas? i am a certified mcse, work on
servers and pc's all day as my job and have never seen
this...????

It could be anything from corruption to just bad luck if you've upgraded
Windows XP from a previous platform. I'd recommend integrating SP-1 onto a
new Windows XP installation disc (Microsoft recommends it too).

i will try that. i know that sp1a can be downloaded and
have seen info that says xp1a is the one to use. i an
unsure of what windows updates loads. i did use windows
update for this bad one we are talking about. i use nero
and will try your suggestion with sp1a on a bootable cd.

Just a quick note...the only difference between SP-1 and SP-1a is that SP-1a
doesn't have the Microsoft VM. So, if you want to use Java applets in IE
(eg. Yahoo games, etc) and are too lazy to install Sun Java (like me ),
you can use SP-1.
