Window XP hangs in chkdsk

I booted my computer this morning and it said that it needed to do a chkdsk
for disk consistency. It completed stage 1 of 3 just fine, but in stage 2 it
hangs at 28%. I left it there for about 10 minutes and it still read 28%
complete. Did I not leave it there long enough? What would be my next step? I
tried booting into safe mode, but it won't. If I cancel the chkdsk, it boots
just fine..but I suspect there is a more serious problem lurking. Thanks

I would run a hard drive test with a diagnostic utility from the drive
mftr.'s website. Usually you make a bootable floppy with the downloaded
program. Do this and boot with the utility. Run a thorough test. If you
get disk errors, back up your data and replace the hard drive.

Some hard drives with NTFS does take a little longer than others, give it
another 10 mins and if nothing happens after that try a restart and run it
again, if it's still causing you problems then run the manufactures
diagnostic utility.
