How can I turn off Windows Messenger anyone?
The svhost RPC (remote procedure call) always activates it even i turn
off the process.
I have turned off the "start when windows boots up" checkmark but this
program still keeps returning to my process list.. frustrating.
Thanks in advance.

Go to Add and Remove Programs, click on Add/Remove Windows Components,
deselect Windows Messenger and click next. Follow the prompts until
you're done.

I think it may require a restart.

Try disabling it under the "Set Program Access & Defaults" utility

Have you got your contacts pane showing in Outlook Express? If so, get
rid of them (click on the "x") and Windows Messenger will cease and desist.

In addition to the others excellent advice, if you don't use WM nuke
it.

Edit the file sysoc.inf in the \windows\inf directory. Look for the line
that begins with: msmsgs=
delete the word "hide" on this line (leave the commas and everything else)
and save the file. Go into control panel, add/remove programs and click on
"Add/Remove Windows Components", scroll to the bottom of the list, uncheck
Windows Messenger and click OK. This will uninstall messenger from your
system.

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

I use the above method, also but I wonder why I should have to do so.

Windows Messenger should be easilly removed and not need all this
faffing about to get rid of it.

Apart from being unwelcome, annoying, constantly trying to rrun /
connect and log into servers at start-up, and being difficult to
prevent from running without the above sledge hammer type approach, is
it not somewhat anti-competitive like the WMP saga?
