Window Media Player

If I stick a video disk in my computer and try to play it on Windows
Media Player, I get picture but no sound. It will play audio CDs ok,
and will play videos using another software, but not with media player.
I presume some other program is interfering. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Open up the Windows Media Player, go to tools and select option.
Under File Types tab, click on select all.

If it's still cannot, open yu My Computer, go to Folder Options under Tools.
Under File Types, please choose the file extension inside your disk and
click on the change to modify the default player for that extension

OK, on the disk - a commercial video of "The Incredibles" I find a
folder entitled "Audio," which appears to be empty, and a folder
entitled "Video" with three kinds of files, .BUP, .IFO, and .VOB. I do
not find any of them on the list in "my computer." This disk plays all
right in other softwares.

By commercial video do you mean DVD? If it is a DVD, you need the DVD codecs.
I believe that Windows Media Player will not play DVDs unless you have DVD
software (WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc.) installed.

Also, CD & DVD drives come with a small wire to connect the drive to the
soundcard. No wire may mean no audio.

The files you are describing are DVD files (IFO & VOB). You need a DVD-ROM
drive to play DVDs. If you are putting a DVD in a CD drive, that may be why.

It is a DVD-ROM drive. I just got the computer. It not only plays
DVDS, it burns them. And I get sound using softwares other than Media
Player.

"ROM" stands for Read Only Memory (or Media) If you truly have a
DVD-ROM you can't burn DVD's with it. So, perhaps you may wish to verify
what type of DVD drive you actually have. The documentation that came
with the computer should spell it out what is installed.

It burns DVDs. I have done so successfully. Sorry about getting the
terminology mixed up.
