Windos explorer crashing!!!

Every time I click on a program or initiate opening a program or folder etc,
windows keeps restarting! Can anyone tell me why, and how to stop this as it
is very annoying!!!

I have a simliar problem with data problems - for the last week or so when
ever I try to open (usually jpgs) I get a message that Windows Explorer has
stopped working and is looking for a solution; the computer then restarts
windows explorer. No error message is sent and no recommended solution
suggested.
