Winchester or Newcastle socket 939 CPU?

I haven't run across this until now, so I'm wondering if there is a benefit
to one over the other, like the Northwood and Canterwood P4s...

What is the difference between the Winchester and Newcastle socket 939 AMD
CPU's?

You havent run across it? There have been threads in this very group.

The Newscastle is 130 nm and the Winchester is 90nm.
One bad thing about the 130 754 socket though some claim they were
able to OC to varying degrees --- is that the 939 was claimed to run
cooler and OC much better. So the 939 was hailed as return of the old
AMD especially since the prices have come down on the 939s. You know
the AMDs that were relatively cheap and could OC like crazy.

The cheapest chip and the one well reviewed was the one I got the 3000
which Anandtech and others OCed like crazy making some believe you
didnt need to buy any other chip . However as I mentioned some have
posted that its more limited than the initial tests claimed in which
they went way over 250 FSB. You also need relatively more expensive
mem since you usually push the memory over 3200/400.

There also more hassle setting various parameters when you OC it just
check the sites than the old barton which was a no brainer.

Oh yeah this all depends on common sense. If someone offers you a
drastically discounted 754 amd 64 and board obviously it might be a
better deal. Frys in the US often has fairly cheap combo deals on the
754 sockets.
