Win9x and Antiviral Software??

N

NewsReader2k

Anyone know of any antiviral software that will run on Win9x operating
systems with 128mb RAM and a 500 GHz or less Processor?

I've done clean installs of the Win9x Operating Systems and all is well
until I install the latest versions of Norton or Mcafee antiviral software.

The system slows down to an unacceptable crawl.

Increasing the RAM is usless because Win9x systems cannot utilize more than
128 MB.

I know that there is other antiviral software out there; I'm looking for one
that's not so intrusive and will run on older systems.

Any feedback on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thx

Have just come back from installing NOD32 on a Win98 machine under the
specs you've given above and I couldn't discern any performance loss. NAV,
however, will cripple a PC of that spec, and I would expect the current
versions of McAfee to do similarly.

Get ahold of an old Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) or Norton System Works
(NSW) CD - 2001 or 2002 version. If the system in question has ever
had NAV or NSW before, you need to fully un-install it (and delete all
symantec and norton directories) before installing it.

Once you install NAV/NSW 2001/2002, you can update it via the
program's liveupdate feature, and it will bring it fully up to date as
far as virus detection capability (arguably it will have the same
protection ability or "strength" as the most recent version of NAV).
You will have continued ability to download virus definition updates
for a year, at which point you can un-install and then re-install to
obtain another year's worth of updates.

If you get NSW (2001 or 2002) don't install clean sweep (I've never
found it useful).

My gut feeling (based on my experience when I transitioned from NAV
2001 to NAV 2002) is that the 2001 version of NAV is less resource
intensive.
I've done clean installs of the Win9x Operating Systems and all
is well until I install the latest versions of Norton or Mcafee
antiviral software.

You will have a hard time fully removing all traces of recent versions
of NAV. There are specific instructions (and software) posted by
Symantec for this.
Increasing the RAM is usless because Win9x systems cannot utilize
more than 128 MB.

You are totally wrong about this. Windows 98 can actually use up to 1
gb of memory, but there can be some major conflicts with video card
memory if you use more than 512 mb. I recommend (and have many P-4
systems that have) 512 mb of memory. You will notice a huge
improvement from 128 mb. A new (ie fast) hard drive will also help.

I also recommend that you have a look here:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Unofficial-Windows-SE-Service-Pack-Download-9065.html

It's a nice package designed to give you a fully optimized and
up-to-date installation of 98.

I hope you have 98se.

I'm running 512MB with Win98SE. Control Panel > System > Performance
displays 512.

Are you talking about Win95?

NOD32 antivirus is a good choice.

NOD32!!!

I run Win98SE on most of my systems including everything from a 400MHz
with 256MB of RAM to a new Athlon 64 3000+ with 1G of memory.

I ran Norton up until a year and a half ago. When I cleaned NAV off of
the last system, I regained 400MB of disk space.

I've been extremely happy with NOD32. Updates are fast and painless and
it catches some Internet nasties and blocks their download. My only
complaint is that it costs me $40.00 USD for every system that I have it
running on.

I use F-Prot on my non-critical PCs that I don't use for E-Mail and
infrequently connect to the net with. The license allows it to be
installed on up to 5 PCs.

Chas.
