Hi,
I have quick formatted a floppy in an XP computer. I then put a load of
files onto the floppy from a windows 98 computer. I then take the floppy
back to an XP system to open the files but XP will not open the floppy or
even recognise it. I just get asked if I want to format the floppy.

How can I get files from a floppy onto an XP from 98?

Cheers
Lenny

It's usually no problem to copy files via Floppy from Win98 to WinXP
and vice versa. In your case, however, the (old) floppy drive in the
Win98 computer *might* be no longer adjusted. You may want to format
the floppy in the Win98 computer but I doubt that this will solve your
problem. Provided that the Win98 computer has USB ports, you may want
to use an USB memory stick instead. Note that Win98 depends on drivers
from the USB stick's manufacturer.

Did you check the floppy drive alignment? It seems different.

Do it in reverse - Format the diskette on the Windows XP PC.
Then take it to the 9X machine and copy your files to it. Then
take the disk back to the XP machine and see if it's readable.
(When you format the diskette - do a Full format)

I have done that but it wouldn't do a full format only a quick one. And I
have the same problem, I can transfer the files onto the floppy but when it
goes back to the XP machine it will not be read.
Also it is a new floppy disc.

You should be able to do a "Full" format, if you have another disk
try that. After you complete a full format, Right Click the Floppy
Icon in My Computer, Left Click Properties - take Tools, then in
the details box for Error Checking - Click Check Now and finally
tic/check both sub-options for scanning the diskette.
The full diskette check will take a few minutes to complete. Then
retry your copy operation.

thanks everyone. I have transferred the files via a USB pen.
I hope I never see another floppy again!

You may not. They're still useful sometimes though. I needed mine to
install drivers when I upgraded to SATA and reinstalled Windows.
