win98 question, hardware related

Trying to revive win98 on a 6Gb fat32 hhd. It was an upgrade install to
begin with. I put an nforce2, AMD MB in to replace the intel sr440bx MB. My
first run with the new MB was with acpi enabled and 1.5 GB ram. I ran into
memory problems lickitysplit and eventually reduced to 512 MBs to get
everything running without memory errors. Win98 will not look at or load any
drivers except those specified by machine.inf. Can I delete machine.inf?

A Windows 98 hardware newsgroup would be the right place to ask
this question.

If the Mobo is fairly new you may nebver get win98 drivers.

Time to give up on win98 and put in a larger HD and load XP (or Win2k) on
the machine

Where's the fun in that? I can get parts for a 10 yearr old car but can't
find software for a 10 year old OS? I got ACPI, VGA and most motherboard
resources working...still trying to hammer out USB and Audio problems. 98
asks for files from CD which I don't have so I try to find them
somewhere...I practically downloaded win98 from the internet...

Yes, you can, but not while you persist in asking your questions
in the wrong newsgroup.

Could you suggest one? I can't seem to find one in English specifically
related to hardware. I am subscribed to ms.p.win98, win98.gen,
win98.general.discussion, win98.pnp<~(probably most relevant),
win98.performance<~(has most posts), etc...

I don't have enough knowledge of how windows has changed in the last ten
years to discredit your comparison, suffice it to say, I disagree.

How about microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, or
microsoft.public.win98.setup? There are lots of them!

As is software that still runs on Win98. You just don't find either on
every store shelve you look at.
