Win98 blaster issue

N

NotAgain

I thought that the MSblaster.exe would not effect
Windows98 operating systems.

I ran a netstat -a what i found was that port 137 and
port 136, 137 and 138 were in use.

How do i convert the results from my DOS window to a
notpad file in order to post oto a newsgroup?

Also i run Norton firewall and have these port numbers
disabled

Those ports are in use on a normal system. The problem was that port
135 when exposed to the internet left the W2K/XP operating systems
vulnerable to the attack from the worm if they were not patched. A
combination of the proper patch and a firewall protects those systems now
from the blaster worm. Windows 98 is not vulnerable to the current blaster
worm. Your firewall blocks access to those ports on your computer to those
on the internet, which is what you want. Those ports are necessary for file
and print sharing. You still need to go to http://windowsupdate.com to
check if there are any critical updates for your computer. --- Steve

Windows 98 is not affected by the Blaster virus. TCP port 135 use is normal.
In Windows NT, 2000, 2003 and XP there is a bug in the RPC code that can be
exploited (the Blaster worm does this) . The bug is fixed by the MS03-026
patch. This bug does not exist in Windows 98.

Thanks,
Marc
