Win98 and XP

I currently have an ethernet LAN with six computers which
share one broadband internet connection. However, I am
having difficulty with the computers recognizing each
other. Oone computer has XP-pro, three have XP-Home, and
two have Win98. The computers with Win98 only recognize
each other, the computers with XP-Home only recognize each
other and the XP-Pro doesn't recognize any of the other
computers. I have run the home office wizard to correct
this problem without success. Am I doing something
wrong?

First you need to make sure you have a common protocol on
EVERY machine, I recomend you use "TCP/IP"

Once you have TCP/IP, configure it on each machine with a
static IP:

WinXP Pro: 192.168.99.0
Win98 #1 : 192.168.99.1
Win98 #2 : 192.168.99.2
WinXP Home 1: 192.168.99.3
WinXP Home 2: 192.168.99.4

Next what you have to do is Enable internet connection
sharing, on the PC which has your Cable/ADSL modem (I
recomend you setup your broadband on the WinXP Pro
machine if possible)

NOTE: For internet conection sharing, the machine with
the broadband MUST have the following static IP:

192.168.99.0

Now on each of the other PC's, simply add your Broadband
PC IP to the Primary DNS and Gateway settings!

Default Gateway: 192.168.99.0
Prefered DNS Server: 192.168.99.0

Once these settings are in, your internet will work
across the network.

NOTE: It is also important that each pc is part of the
same Workgroup / Domain, such as "HOME" or "DEFAULT"
otherwise file sharing etc wont work.

Hope this helps, it solved my problem with sharing
internet accross 6 PC's with diferent OS systems.

sounds like name resolution issue. if you don't have a domain and wins, you
should enable NetBIOS over tcp/ip.
