Win98 accessing a win2k machine

OK chaps - this ones no doubt been answered before.

My org has obtained a new lathe that has a pc attached running win98. I
need to to access share on w win2k machine, both are in the same workgroup,
the win2k machine can access all the directories on the win98 machine, but
the win98 machine cannot access the 2k machines share (which I need it to)
all I get is access denied (from the custom application).

Any ideas why a win98 refuses to access a win2k share?

This is because Win2000 is a secure operating system. You must
use a logon account / password on the Win98 PC that is also
defined on the Win2000 machine. If you don't then the Win98
PC will be treated as a stranger and refused access to the Win2000
resources. The name of the workgroup is irrelevant.

Is their a "user" name identical to the 98 machine set up on
2K.......Have you tried this?

Hi and thanks.

Soooo, i need to logon to the win98 machine using the same username and
password as one of the local accounts on the win2k machine?

One of the most common reason for these errors is failure to use
Authenticated logons on the Windows 98 PC. Windows 2000 will not permit
access if you don't have proper credentials. Make sure that you logon
to the Windows 98 box with username and password. The Windows 2000 pc
has to have an account with the same username and password as the
Windows 98 machine, (or the Windows 98 must match one of the usermname
and password on the Windows 2000).

You can find more in depth information for the Windows 98 setup here:
