Win95 Generic host

Hello
I keep getting an error message involving the above , telling me it
has shut down.This happens at start up.Could this be why I'm not getting
automatic virus database updates from avast?(security centre reports that my
avast software is out of date).

Any help welcomed ,

Are you running Win95? or is this error on WinXP, saying it is Win95
Generic host? If the former, FYI Win95 is no longer supported - you can try
a Win9x newsgroup, but this is a WinXP newsgroup. If the latter, you most
certainly have some type of malware lurking - trying downloading AdAware
from lavasoft.de and running it.
