i downloaded q824145,win32 cabinet self-extractor.i do
not know why i downloaded this. And I do not know where
to find if this already on my computer. Should I delete
or open the download? If I open will it cause any harm to
my computer or will it override if it already exists on
my computer. I use windows XP

I'm assuming that you downloaded the file from [watch wrap]:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/d/7/9d7d9a9b-6b4c-41cf-8db6-
331c1c6606e2/q824145.exe
or windows update.

It is 2,226,304 bytes in length, has an MD5 of
4715704ce72a21c08a4c745a645e2463, and a CRC32 9440d00d.

Microsoft updates are intelligent enough to only install themselves if
it is necessary (ie. you don't have a future update installed). Should
you have a future update installed, the update will detect this and not
change your computer. Oh, and if you did get one of the other q824145s,
they will detect Windows XP, and bail out too.

This intelligent update technology has been the present since the early
Win2k patches, IIRC.

If you want to know what hotfixes you have, either:
download qfecheck from [watch wrap]:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=155c7c58-102e-
47b0-a12a-bfab8cfccc03&DisplayLang=en

OR

look in your registry for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\*
This won't display hotfixes that were present in service packs.

For Internet Explorer. Open a new IE window, click Help -> About. The
About box lists the updates present.
