win32 generic host?

Recently, not long after we get on line, a "win32 generic
host..." error occurs, then, shortly after, a message
pops up and gives me less than a minute to shut down, or
my computer will shut down for me. This only happens when
we're online. We're trying mulitple browsers, and that's
not it. We're going to different sites, that's not it. It
could be a virus, but I can't get updates for my
protection, because you've get to be online to get them.

Of note, my wife recently installed Microsoft Office. I
mention that only because that's the only significant
change the computer's had in it's makeup lately.

Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks
