Generic Host Process For Win32 - Ugh

F

FensterBos

I am receiving these error messages when I restart/boot-up my computer. The
full error message is as follows: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
encountered a problem and needed to close.
I've tried to research solutions but have been unsuccessful in treating the
problem. I know this is something common since my wife's computer had this
problem a few years ago, but it was her company that fixed it.
Can anyone lead me in the right direction?
Thank you for the help.

YOu might need to first find the root cause of the issue before
troubleshooting.

Try performing clean boot
Perform a divide and conquer to trace the defected item

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Once the defected item is found try cleaning it from the start up from
either of the folloowing ways

*Run>msconfig>start-up\Services
*open Run>regedit>HKLM>software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run (For
start-up

*HKLM>System>CurrentControlset>Services

Remove the appropriate entry that caused the problem during the divide and
conquer.

Post back with the results if you still require any help

First off, thank you for helping me with this problem.
I performed a "clean boot" and at first it seemed like I solved the problem
because I did not receive the Generic Host error. I went back to the System
Config window and selected the services I recognized and restarted the
computer. It was then when I received more of the error messages after the
reboot. So, I have yet to solve the problem.
I am going to give a clean boot another shot.

To follow up on this, I deselected everything that wasn't microsoft and the
error still occurred. I am guessing it is a microsoft problem; does anyone
know of any programs/drivers/applications that is common with this problem?

Do a Google search and you'll get several ideas.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You should find a report referring svchost.exe. We need a copy of that
report and any in the minute or so before the report.

Hope this helps.
