win2k pro freezes at start up

when I start my computer, it freezes after I sign on. I
am running win2k pro. The computer appears to boot
normally and there are no error messages, but when you
move the mouse down to where the start menu is, it
changes from a pointer to an hour glass. I noticed none
of the icons that are usually in the very bottom right
are there ie virus scan, sound control, etc. the only
thing I can do is bring up the end task box, but no tasks
are listed as running. and when I close it, it doesnt go
away.

How can I find out what is causing the computer to freeze?
 
Also when I reboot or shutdown using ctrl-alt-del a box
pops up that says explorer.exe is running....end now?
