win2k pro and sound

Any ideas on what kills sound so the machine has to be
rebooted to get system, music, etc.,,... sounds to come
back. Media player doesn't have any sound either when the
sound goes out BUT the old win98 cd player program still
will work and produce sound.
1. The drivers been removed/reinstalled/updated- Nothing.
2. No IRQ's problems.
ASUS mb with int. sound. I thought bad sound chip but
since the old player works- system issue it seems.
