win2k - help!

jch

I'm trying to do a favor for a neighbor. They've gotten a PC free (a Dell
PIII) from a friend which has Win2kPro already installed on it. They want me
to check it out and to copy files over from their older PC and install some
new software. OK fine. Glad to help but they don't have the Win2k CDs. I can
only log on as guest. The LAN card doesn't seem to work ("This device cannot
start (Code 10)") I'm not used to Win2k (95, 98, ME, XP - but not 2k).

Any advice on how to troubleshoot the LAN card? I need the LAN card so I
can copy files over the network.

Will I be able to install new software if I can only log in as Guest? I
have to install MSOffice, some games, etc.

Thanks!

Ask the friend of a friend for the local administrator password. Better yet
ask for the CD-Rom, blow it away and start a new install.

Download and install the latest Windows 2000 driver from the manufacturer's
web site.

Yes I'm working on getting that administrator password now. I don't think
they'll be able to get the CDs. Will I definitely need the password to
install software??
Download and install the latest Windows 2000 driver from the
manufacturer's
web site.

It's a 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible)
card. I cant even get on the network with it. Hardware manager says it
won't start - Error 10. Any other troubleshooting advice?

Thanks.

1.) Yes
2.) Same answer. Download and install the latest Windows 2000 driver from
the manufacturer's web site.

Thanks Dave but,

1) Logging in as Guest I was able to install MS Office 2000. How am I able
to do that?

2) Trying to troubleshoot, I went into BIOS and confirmed that the onboard
NIC was enabled. It was. When it booted again the NIC was working. Go
figure. Thanks for the driver update I'll install that as well.

No, I'll keep asking here. This seems to be a general login/permissions
issue. I log in as Guest but I am able to install software (MSOffice, games,
etc)

So my question is what is the typical login procedure for Win2k? I've no
experience with 2k but the machine I'm on logs in as guest yet I'm able to
install software. Is this normal? Is there a way to do away with the login
prompt all together?
Thanks.

Control Panel|Users and Passwords, then uncheck the box for "Users must
enter a user name and password to use this computer", restart for effect.
