Win2k Hangs on Install - Searching For Previous Windows Installations

C

Carissa

Well, the subject line pretty much sums up the problem.
I'll sum up how I got to this point now.

I run two computers side-by-side with a KVM switch (Win2k
& Linux Mandrake 9.1). I had my Win2k machine (aka Borg)
off and the switch was set to Linux (aka LCARS). I
powered on Borg, realized my mistake and switched the KVM
to Borg. Too late, keyboard & mouse apparently not
recognized. I got to my Alt-Ctrl-Del sign screen but
didn't have mouse or kbd controls. Had to turn off the
computer the hard way. Rebooted Borg with KVM switch set
to him. Windows errors me saying a file got corrupted. I
tried the repair consoles - no luck.

Try to use my Windows CD to reinstall Windows. I try ti
keep the OS separate on its own physical HD & programs
and documents on their own physical HD - so reinstalling
Windows wouldn't be that big of a deal anyhow. Anyhow, I
get to the point of "Searching for Previous Versions of
Windows".... It simply hangs. I left it there for a few
hours while I went out to do some errands hoping it was
just taking an enormously long time to search. Got back
still no change.

I've reinstalled & installed Windows 2000 many a times...
never has this happened to me. I can't seem to find any
help in the Knowledge Base or through a Google search.
The only reason I can actually get online now is because
of a break at work and LCARS.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.
Carissa.

Hi Carissa,
The symptoms you noted could be caused by one or more bad blocks on the hard
disk. Try booting into Recovery Console, and running CHKDSK /P /R. Be aware
this could take a long time, especially if the volume is large and if there
are significant problems found.
