Win2000 SP4 killed my workstation

S

Stephen Desforges

I applied W2k SP4 to a workstation that was running W2K
Pro (no service pack). After installing the SP, I
rebooted as requested. All I get now is the infamous blue
screen with a message that says a boot device can't be
found. Any suggestions on how I can even get into the PC
to fix this mess? And if I get in, what do I do?

By the way, the PC is an older machine with a PII 300MHz
processor but has run quite well for the last two years.
I upgraded to SP4 so I could put the latest patches on
it. I am beginning to sweat. HELP!

Try booting to recovery mode using win2k CD - Repair -
Recovery mode and replace the missing boot files from
drive. You will need at least ntldr, ntdetect.com and a
boot.ini file that is correct for your installation.

Barring that, you can go to ntfs.com, get an ntfs bootdisk
and try copying your data over to a zip or something.

You could also create a win2k boot disk by copying ntldr,
ntdetect.com and boot.ini over from a working 2000 install
which has WINNT in the same drive ie: C/D as your machine
and use that to boot the machine.
