Win2000 hibernate prevents use of older moniitor?

IIAC this problem is as likely in winXP as win2000, and the solution
would be the same.

I am trying to fix up a computer with win2000 Pro and it seems to not
work with the old monitor I have for testing.

I start it up and it displays the first two pages well, then at the
bottom of the page it shows what I think is an un-hibernate bar which
progresses to the right, and then it displays full screen a beautiful
Win2000 Pro screen, where that's all it says on the whole screen,
except at the bottom there is another progress bar that is labeled
"Starting Up".

When that bar gets to the end, the next screen is mostly black with a
varying band that looks like the monitor is running at the wrong
frequency for the video controller.

IIRC control panel/display will take care of this, but I don't know
how to get there. I can't see what is on the screen, I can't see the
cursor, I can't see what I type, and when I press the Windows key, I
can't see any change! :( What should I do? Thanks.

Boot into safe mode, uninstall the video card driver, reboot into normal
mode and let it installa the video driver over.

Startup in safe mode (if that doesn't work, you have some other
problems) and adjust the video for a minimum display. Then bootup
normally and change the display again to your liking.

Thanks a lot to you and Shenan. It's working now.
