Win XP

I have a dell 500Mhz computer running Win 98. I want to
upgrade to XP but was told by a technician that my
computer was to slow. He said that it would slow down to a
crawl. Is this true?

It doesn't just depend on the processor, it depends on how much system
memory and how much memory your graphics card has as well. Generally,
speaking, I have to agree with the technician, if you are satisfied with the
speed you are getting with Win98, you can expect XP to be slower, how much
slower depends on other factors I've mentioned.

I have gateway 500 with 384 ram and have no problems.
Used xp test copys all of them no problem . I find xp
faster and better than 98, have used 2000 too xp is still
better. 98 2nd ed has plenty of problems. xp almost loads
everything for you real easy to use. My speeds are higher
at pc pitstop ran all systems there xp ran best on this
500.

No.

If you have sufficient memory (how much is sufficient depends on
what apps you run, but in general, you need at least 256MB) it
will run at acceptable (but not fast) speed.

For a system like yours, you might be better off purchasing a new system
with XP preinstalled. The cost of the XP upgrade plus the cost of upgrading
software and hardware to XP compatibility would probably be close to the
same. You would also have the option to network the two systems and have the
ability to run all your software and hardware plus having a much faster XP
system.
BTW, I have never seen a system run as fast with XP than it would with 98 or
2000.

Just thought I'd add in here, I have a dell 700MHz celeron, 320 ram and a
64MB Geforce 2 and XP runs great, much faster and more stable than 98SE ever
thought of being.

Provided you turn off excess 'eye candy' it should be OK; though
multimedia needs more speed, it does just as much in Win98. I suggest
unchecking the first ten items in the Visual effects found when you go
to Control Panel - System - Advanced - and click Settings in
Performance.

What is more to the point is to check how much RAM you have - if under
256 MB, don't bother
