Win XP terminates due to RPC error

This problem occurs on my home machine running Windows XP
and connecting to the Internet using Internet Explorer 6.0.
Connection is made OK and my Home page loads up, however
if I then try to do a search or read mail, I get the
following message: "Windows is closing down due to an
unexpected error in RPC - Remote Procedure Call. Please
save all work. Windows is closing down in nn seconds".
Windows then shuts itself down and reload. This only seems
to occurr when connecting to the internet - if I just use
the computer for Word or Excel it's OK.
This has only started happening this week, last Sunday I
used the Internet and all was OK. No changes made since
then so I can't understand what has now happened to cause
this.
Anyone got any ideas?

As soon as you can! You are running the 32-bit version

Also enable Windows XP's built in firewall:

Then go to WindowsUpdate to pick up the latest updates:
