Win XP startup problems

Sometimes, Win XP starts up VERY slowly. Other times,
everything works OK. When it isn't working properly, once
startup has reached the black XP scren, the green
progress bar under the windoes logo moves and stops
continually sometimes for over 10 minutes before my
computer starts. Once startup has passed this point,
everything seems OK. I've tried a few things, but I'm not
really sure how to proceed.
Thanks

Hi! Chris!
Have you checked in Safe Mode?
Try this also:-
start > Run >type msconfig > ok
click to "start up" tab and uncheck those unnecessary
applications which you won't want to start with windows
startup > apply > reboot.
Antivirus also checks your system and thus takes it's own
time.
Enter the BIOS and check whether the 1st boot is HDD or
not,if others like floppy/cd rom then disable them
Update your drivers as well as windows.
There is an excellent tool BOOTVIS.EXE which really
reduces the booting time but it is not available at the
moment.
