Subject: Win XP SP2 Security Center says my PC may be vulnerable 3/10/2006
9:10 AM PST

My problem:

Periodically throughout the day it is reported that Win XP SP2 firewall is
off, however it turns itself back on approx 2 seconds after that. This
happens approx. once every hour.

I have an up to date Trend Micro AV and Webroot Spy Sweeper which have been
run multiple times and find nothing malicious on my system.

Jim suggested the following:

No, that is not normal. I would suspect malware somewhere on the computer.
It is time for you to download David Lippman's Multi_Av package.
Jim

I responded:

Jim,

I downloaded the Multi_Av package, rebooted my PC in safe mode, and began to
run the Sophos part of the package. After nine hours, I shut it down....it
had not completed the sophos part of the scan yet. Should it take that long?
For reference, the PC is an AMD Athlon 3500, 1 Gig of RAM.

I went to bed when it started on my itunes folder (the file types it was
scanning was *.m4a, which are music files I believe, so I assume it was in my
itunes, there shouldn't be any music files anywhere else on my PC) and it was
still working on that when I got up, which is when I shut it down. It
reported the time of operation as a little over nine hours, that there had
been two errors, and that no viruses were found. It was continuing to scan
files, the program never stopped scanning or locked up, it was just taking
forever, and since it was only on part 1 of it's 4 parts ( sophos, McAfee,
Kapersky, Trend) I figured it would take several days to complete the entire
thing, so I stopped it.

I don't know if it's relevant or not, but there is just under 60 Gig of
music in itunes.

At any rate, could you advise me on this program? Should it take that long,
should I just let it run and do it's thing? Do I really need to scan in safe
mode?

Thanks,
Waldo

It was also asked if I had installed any other type of Firewall or security
suite on my system that could be causing problems. The answer is no, no
other hardware or software firewall has been on the PC that could be
disabling it.

Also, I have disabled my spyware sweeper and I still get the pop up. I will
disable my anti virus (Trend) to see if I still get the warning. I know I
will get a constant warning that the AV program is disabled, I suppose that
should make it easy to see if I get the disabled firewall message as well.

Usenet is not a web forum, it's Usenet, there is a big difference.

Bumping would be considered RUDE in Usenet.

If you post a question and wait for 24 hours and don't get a reply, it
generally means one of two things: 1) You didn't word your question such
that people can understand your problem. 2) There wasn't anyone that
could help you with your described problem.

You could reply to your own posts, you could repost with a different
subject, you could post to a different group.

Trend Micro (PC_Cillin) contains a firewall. Perhaps that is the source of
your problem. One software firewall is an ample supply.

Hi Jim,

Trend Mirco Security Suite contains a firewall, but I have Trend Micro AV
program only, it does not contain a firewall in it.

It is strange, however, that my AV program does have a grayed out button for
a firewall and spam filter though. The Trend Micro Security Suite contains a
spyware program, firewall program, and a spam filtering program along with
the AV program. I am assuming that the security suite (which I do not have)
uses the exact same interface that the AV program (which I do have) uses, and
the options you don't have are just grayed out until you upgrade to the
security suite.

At any rate, I diabled the Trend Micro AV and my Spyware Sweeper alternately
and still received the message, so it would seem that they are not
interfering with each other.

Have you had much experience with Lippman's Multi_AV? It ran incredibly
slow for me, took over nine hours to scan my HD and still had not completed
the first part (Sophos) of the scan.

Leythos:

My apologies to you and the usenet. I was not aware that my behavior was
rude.

No, as luck would have it, I have never needed such a tool..
